Short Bio

Primarily a landscape artist, I have been known to include some architecture and unique perspectives as well as animal life both near and far. Starting in the arts late in life, it quickly became my passion. Whether it’s reproducing an image or simply moving paint around, the act of creating a mood inspires me to keep painting. I generally paint from photographs, but have been recently inspired by plein air painting using Acrylic or watercolor.

Statement

While Deb Carpenter’s degree is in Business management and Information Systems, she discovered the arts late in life. She did some sketching as a teenager and in her early twenties, but it wasn’t until 2006 when she discovered the liquid form of art in a college course on Landscape in Watercolor. This first class involved using the opaque method, a mixture of watercolor and gouache; more recently she has done work using the more traditional watercolor method. In 2009, she started working with Oils on canvas and by 2013 she added acrylics to her portfolio. She is currently working with Acrylic and Watercolors.
In 2010, Deb had her first solo show at the Guilderland Library. Her work has since been shown at many locations in the tri-city area as well as NYC. An award winning artist, she also takes on commission work. She was the President of the Board for the Schenectady Art Society (SAS) for many years and holds current memberships with Saratoga Arts, and the Colonie Art League as well as SAS.
While serving as President for SAS, the group partnered with the City of Schenectady in a city wide art project. This involved painting designs on the traffic light control boxes found on the city’s street corners. Each design was created by an SAS member and approved by City officials. In addition to the City project, the group has also volunteered with several community projects: Mural at the Boys & Girls Club of Schenectady, Sign at the Helderberg Ambulance Squad in Berne NY, and a Mural at Woodlawn Park in Schenectady NY.
Deb has taught several classes using acrylic paints at the Albany Curling Club, Mabee Farms (plein air), Niskayuna Senior Center, residential classes, and plans to begin classes at the Guilderland Senior Center once this epic pandemic of 2020 subsides.
